2015 Copa America Tournament Preview

The 2015 Copa America tournament gets underway in Chile on Thursday and will see 12 nations from two football confederations fight it out for South America’s top continental prize.

With mainstay CONMEBOL super powers Brazil, Argentina and Chile all confirmed and considered the tournament’s leading chances, two CONCACAF teams in Mexico and Jamaica have been invited to partake in the 2015 edition of the competition; the former a continual entrant and the latter one of a rotating list of guest nations.

The Copa America is considered one of the most open international football tournaments in the world and is known for producing both upset and interesting results – In the competition’s most recent edition in 2011, Paraguay incredibly made the final without winning a single game in the lead-up; progressing solely on penalty shootout success.

Three Groups of four teams will contest six pool matches each, with the top two nations in each progressing to the tournament’s knockout stage and the two highest-ranked third-placegetters also moving on.

Group A is undoubtedly highlighted by Chile; the $5 third-favourite to win the 2015 Copa America with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.

Unlucky to be knocked out of the 2014 World Cup in the Round of 16, La Roja will playoff against Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia for a place in the second round of Copa America.

Uruguay are the tournament’s defending champions but face an uphill battle to successfully defend their title after losing the services of key marksman Luis Suarez through suspension and veteran Diego Forlan, who retired earlier this year.

Undoubtedly led by Paris St-Germain star Edinson Cavani, Los Charruas remain some chance of success at a quote of $10 to win the 2015 Copa America but will have to overcome a tough Group B also featuring Argentina, Paraguay and Jamaica.

Brazil currently rate as tournament second-favourites at a quote of $4 behind Argentina ($3), but are clear $1.55 favourites to top Group C.

World Cup hero James Rodriguez has been confirmed to take his place in Colombia’s campaign, while Peru and Venezuela complete the final pool.

The 2015 Copa America will officially begin on June 11th with an encounter between hosts Chile and Ecuador at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago.
